Project Overview
The Cost of Living Project is a telecollaborative project is an information exchange activity that will allow students from around the world to collect and submit data about local living expenses including the cost of grocery items, utilities, rent/mortgage payments, and gas. All participating classes will have access to the data and will be able to perform unit conversions and calculate averages and other mathematical statistics. Students will be able to make inferences from the data about the experience of living in different locations and will gain an appreciation of other cultures. Students will post updates and reflections in a discussion forum throughout the project and will post a final original reflective work at the conclusion of the project.
Although there are specific deadlines for phases of the project, there is also flexibility built into the schedule so that teachers can fit the project into their curriculum at the best time for each class. Additionally, while all classes will calculate and compare the category average, maximum, and minimum for the collected data, teachers will be able to decide the appropriate levels of additional mathematical calculations for their class(es) to complete. The project is therefore appropriate for any students in grades 6-9 (ages 11-15) because of the adaptations that can be made by each participating teacher.
Please note that there are technological requirements for participating in this project. Each participating class must have regular, reliable internet access. Furthermore, classes must have the ability to use Google Apps, as many components of the program will involve submitting information through Google Forms. If you are interested in participating in this project but are concerned about the technological requirements, please contact the project coordinator to discuss your situation.
